Folklore Museum

The Folklore Museum gives you an overview on archaeological records of the island. There are museums in Arkasa, Olymbos and Othos village – they focus on the history and culture of the island’s inhabitants. Traditional costumes, pictures and various objects and items are exposed.

Paliokastro

Rising beyond the village is the "Acropolis" the PALIOKASTRO (old castle). At the "Paliokastro" there are vestiges from the Mycenaean acropolis and its Cyclopean walls. The acropolis was inhabited until the late Byzantine period. A colorful mosaic floor may be seen in its 5th Century Church of Aghia Anastassia.

Wind Surfing

Karpathos is a great place for windsurfing with the meltemi blows full force starting from the north down throughout the high mountains, with high-wind days being virtually an everyday occurrence in July and August.

Scuba Diving

In the beginning of 2007 in the beautiful island of Karpathos was established the first diving school. The main office is located in the center of Pigadia next to the big church of Aghi Apostoli. Observe and admire the Karpathian underwater beauties by attending small groups with the view of absolute safety and environmental protection.

Saint Nicholas Beach

Well organized beach in Arkasa situated southwestern to Pigadia. It is one of the best beaches of the island with sandy beach with nice white sand and shallow sea while it is very popular because of big wave. There are sun beds and umbrellas, showers, restaurants and it is reachable by car.

Karpathos - Travel Information

Karpathos International Airport (AOK) in Afiartis area is Karpathos’s major airport, serving as the entry point for most of Karpathos’s visitors. There are almost daily flights which connect the Athens International Airport with Karpathos and during the summer season there are some direct charter flights from abroad. You can go to Karpathos by ferries from Piraeus, to the south of Athens. The trip takes about 15 hours. There are also normal ferries connecting Karpathos with neighboring islands.

Bus & Schedules

KTEL Karpathou SA has the responsibility for transportational exploitation of Long Distanceroutes of the island. There are regular bus connections between Karpathos town and most villages, resorts and other places of interest. The terminal for KTEL busses in Karpathos town is next to Taxi Station.

Passports And Visas

U nationals require only a valid identity card while UK visitors require a passport. Citizens of the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand do not require visas for a stay of up to 90 days.

Banks are open from 8:00 until 14:30 from Monday until Friday. Banks and automatic cash machines are placed in Pigadia Town. The currency in Karpathos is the euro, as in other European Union countries. The euro is divided into 100 cents. There are eight different coins: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cent, and 1 and 2 Euro. There are seven different bank notes, for the following amounts: 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 Euro.

Credit Card

All major Credit Cards as well as Euro-cheques are recognized and and accepted. Most business such as restaurants, shops, and hotel s prefer cash to credit cards, and usually pass on to you the percentage charged by the credit card company, which can be as much as 5 per cent.

Karpathos enjoys a mild temperate Mediterranean climate. During the summer months the temperature may occasionally reach the upper 30’s(high-factor sunscreen or sun block to be used) but due to the cooling factor of the frequent winds an average of 28°C can be expected.Winters on the island are mild with an average temperature of 15°.
